MAURICIO PELLEGRINO CONFIRMED AS NEW SOUTHAMPTON MANAGER

Image
Southampton have appointed the former Argentina international Mauricio Pellegrino on a three-year contract having seen off competition from Crystal Palace and other clubs across Europe for a manager whom they believe fits their criteria perfectly. The 45-year-old came through interviews with the club as their preferred candidate following the sacking of Claude Puel. Pellegrino, who took Alaves to the final of the Copa del Rey last season, is happy to work in the Southampton structure where the manager has parity with other key department such as medical and recruitment. There will be obvious comparisons with another Argentine, Mauricio Pochettino, now one of Europe’s leading managers who was appointed by Southampton under the Nicola Cortese regime in January 2013 and led Tottenham Hotspur to a second place Premier League finish last season. "I obviously support Madrid, but Buffon's career should not come to an end without him having won the Champions League. He has won almost everything, except this one and it is weigh...

If they lose, though, a win at home to Eibar would be enough to earn Barcelona a third straight title under Luis Enrique. And history shows the pressure of a final-day showdown can do funny things. ESPN FC take a look at five times Madrid and Barca have scrapped it out on the final day of the season to be crowned champions of Spain ... 1991-92 Going into the final day: 1. Real Madrid 54 2. Barcelona 53 Final standings: 1. Barcelona 55 2. Real Madrid 54 Madrid were top since the seventh game of the season, but Barca managed to cling on to their coattails. Going into the final match of the campaign, Leo Beenhakker's Madrid had a one point lead and, some thought more importantly, the advantage of facing an already safe Tenerife side managed by a former Madrid player in the final match of th...
