Gunners wins the Emirates Cup

Arsenal have retained the Emirates Cup, despite losing 2-1 to Sevilla on Sunday.

Arsene Wenger’s men had won their first fixture on Saturday, beating Benfica 5-2. Sevilla saw off RB Leipzig 1-0 in the opening game.

Correa gave the La Liga the lead, before the Gunners’ record signing Alexandre Lacazette equalized around the hour mark.

However, Steven Nzonzi denied Arsenal victory with a stunning effort late on.

It however did not stop the hosts from winning the 9th edition of the preseason tournament, thanks to number of goals scored.


Alexandre Lacazette scored a first home goal for Arsenal since his £52m move from Lyon as the Gunners lost to Sevilla but retained the Emirates Cup.

The France international, 26, tapped home following Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross.

Sevilla had taken the lead through Joaquin Correa, while Steven N’Zonzi’s long-range strike ensured a 2-1 win.

But the Gunners still claimed the trophy on goals scored – despite Sevilla winning both their matches.

The La Liga side overcame Germany’s RB Leipzig 1-0 in their opener, while Arsenal beat Benfica 5-2.

Each team earned a point for every goal scored, meaning the Gunners finished top of the table.

Lacazette was taken off 10 minutes after scoring against Sevilla as he appeared to be troubled by a leg injury, but manager Arsene Wenger said the change had nothing to do with that.

Lacazette’s first goal for his new club came against Sydney FC in their pre-season opener.

Arsenal face Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley on 6 August, before starting the Premier League season against Leicester City five days later.

Liverpool signs Naby Keita for a club-record fee £48m

Liverpool have confirmed the agreement of a club-record deal to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita next summer. The Reds will pay the £48m release clause that will allow Keita to join the club, as well as an undisclosed premium. Keita completed a medical on Monday and will officially join Liverpool on July 1 next year. The fee will also surpass the £39.5m paid to Roma for Mohamed Salah this summer.
