Arsenal agree £6.8m transfer fee for Henry Onyekuru

Image
Arsenal have agreed a £6.8m fee with Belgian club KAS Eupen for Nigeria striker Henry Onyekuru, according to Sky sources. The Gunners have been in talks with the Belgian club since last week, having led a string of Premier League teams interested in the 19-year-old. Personal terms have not yet been agreed with the player's representatives, Sky sources understand, but he is an avid Arsenal fan and understood to be keen on the move. Onyekuru is the top scorer in the Jupiler League, notching his 20th goal on May 20, and has been of interest to Everton, Southampton, West Ham and West Brom. He is thought to have a £6.8m release clause in his contract, and has already turned down moves to Belgian giants Brugge and Anderlecht. Celtic are also understood to have come close to signing him in January but Eupen refused to sell him during the winter transfer window. Onyekuru made his debut for Eupen in 2015 as a 17-year-old and helped the club achieve promotion to the Belgian

It's a huge honour to win, with such big-name footballers nominated," added the striker, whose club will seek to retain their Champions League title  to complete back-to-back trebles  when they face Paris St-Germain in Thursday's all-French final in Cardiff. It's really special, so many people from different cultures and countries voting for this trophy, it's a huge motivation in itself. An emot

He has, however, agreed personal terms and is ready to open an exciting new chapter in his career. A statement on Liverpool's official website read: "The 19-year-old striker will complete the transfer to the Reds on July 1, 2017, upon the expiry of his contract with his current club, Chelsea. Wenger agrees a Two Years deal with Arsenal

The veteran coach will sign a new contract at the Emirates Stadium ahead of the 2017-18 season after meetings at a boardroom level Arsene Wenger is set to stay at Arsenal and will sign a two-year contract at the club, Goal can confirm. Arsenal fans plead for Tuchel The 67-year-old's new deal has been approved despite a boardroom split and his salary will remain the same. Wenger and majority shareholder Stan Kroenke held a private meeting in a secret location on Monday, and the details of the Frenchman's contract were confirmed 24 hours later in a boardroom meeting. A formal announcement is likely to follow on Wednesday. The structure of the club is set to remain the same under Wenger's management ahead of the 2017-18 campaign. The Frenchman's future was shrouded in uncertainty ahead of last weekend's FA Cup final against Chelsea. Arsenal emerged victorious, despite being underdogs against the newly-crowned Premier League champions, and the club are n

Chelsea accept £10m Begovic bid from Bournemouth

Image
The Bosnia and Herzegovina goalkeeper looks set to leave Stamford Bridge after playing just two Premier League games under Antonio Conte this season Chelsea have accepted a £10 million bid from AFC Bournemouth for Asmir Begovic. The goalkeeper has not yet agreed personal terms with the Cherries, and the formality of a medical still needs to take place. Begovic joined Chelsea from Stoke City for a fee of around £8 million in 2015, but has made just 33 appearances for the Blues since then. He had been linked with a move in January, but Chelsea's failure to draft in Celtic's Craig Gordon or another adequate replacement saw the club retain his services until the end of the season. During that transfer window, Begovic spoke of his disappointment at not featuring regularly and revealed his desire to leave for more first-team opportunities. The Bosnia and Herzegovina international played just twice in the Premier League in 2016-17, conceding five goals, and is now set to move on.

Manager Thomas Tuchel leaves Borussia Dortmund

Image
Manager Thomas Tuchel has left Borussia Dortmund after two years in charge, the Bundesliga club has said. The 43-year-old took over following Jurgen Klopp's departure in 2015. Dortmund beat Eintracht Frankfurt to win the German Cup on Saturday and finished third in the Bundesliga to qualify for the Champions League. Relations between Tuchel and chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke have been strained since Dortmund's team bus was damaged by an explosion on 11 April. In a statement, Dortmund said Tuchel's departure was "in no way" related to a "disagreement between two people." The announcement came after talks between Tuchel and Watzke on Tuesday. Tuchel claims neither he nor his players were consulted about whether they should play the Champions League quarter-final home tie against Monaco less than 24 hours after three explosions in the area of the team bus. Watzke denied that was the case and said the claim had annoyed him. On an official Twitter ac

Casillas wants Buffon to win Champions League - but not this year

Image
The Porto goalkeeper is hopeful that the Italian will one day win Europe's top club competition but doesn't want him to achieve it against Real Madrid Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas feels Gianluigi Buffon deserves to win the Champions League, but he will still be cheering for his boyhood team when they take on Juventus on Saturday. Buffon has won numerous trophies throughout his illustrious career, but Champions League glory has evaded the veteran shot stopper until now. The 39-year-old lost the final in 2003 and 2015 and he will be hoping it is third time lucky in Cardiff this weekend. "Had the opponent not been Real Madrid, I would have wanted Buffon to win the Champions League with all my heart, he deserves it," Casillas told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "I obviously support Madrid, but Buffon's career should not come to an end without him having won the Champions League. He has won almost everything, except this one and it is weigh

After 45 Years Huddersfield earn Premier League promotion with gutsy win on penalties

Image
There could surely be nobody who enjoyed this season's Championship playoff final. Not the neutrals, who were subjected to 120 minutes of increasing tedium and grim, tension-filled incompetence. Not Reading, who after a brilliant season in which expectations were exceeded, had their campaign defined by one game. And maybe not even Huddersfield Town, who ultimately won promotion to the Premier League after an excruciating penalty shootout. Not that they will care too much about how they won, of course. David Wagner has been fond of comparing his side's run to Leicester City's Premier League title victory, which might be a bit much, but this is still an extraordinary feat. The boss was brought in last November to ensure Huddersfield survived in the Championship and, having done that, he has now taken them out of the division via the other end. The man who learned his trade under Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund will now be managing against his old friend in

Barcelona: Ernesto Valverde replaces Luis Enrique as manager

Image
Barcelona have appointed Ernesto Valverde as their head coach on a two-year deal, with an option for a third. Former Barca forward Valverde announced last week that he was leaving Athletic Bilbao after four years in charge. He replaces Luis Enrique, who revealed in March that he would leave the club - who finished second in La Liga - at the end of his three-year contract. Enrique led Barcelona to the treble in his first season, the domestic double in 2016 and the Copa del Rey this year. They beat Alaves 3-1 in Sunday's final - his last match in charge. Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu praised 53-year-old Valverde's "ability, judgement, knowledge and experience", adding: "He promotes young players and he plays the Barca way." Valverde's presentation as Barca's new coach will take place on Thursday.

Tiger Woods: Alcohol 'not involved' in arrest

Image
Golfer Tiger Woods says alcohol was not involved in his arrest while driving in Florida early on Monday. The player, who was charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI), blamed an unexpected reaction to prescribed medication. I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions, he said. Police released a mugshot of Woods, looking unshaven and unkempt, following his arrest in the town of Jupiter. I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications, he said. I didn't realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly. He added: I would like to apologise with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans. I expect more from myself too. An unwanted image   The mugshot shows a rumpled Tiger Woods, bleary-eyed and unshaven  just the sort of image he would not want associated with himself in public. Retiring Roma legend Francesco Totti: 'I'm not ready to say it's over'

Image
Roma legend Francesco Totti admitted he was "afraid" of what comes next as he bid a warm farewell to the only club of his career on Sunday. Totti, 40, played his final match for Roma, for whom he debuted as a 16-year-old in 1993, coming on as a substitute in the 54th minute of the Giallorossi's 3-2 Champions League-clinching victory over Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico. The Roma captain led his side to a Serie A title, two Coppa Italia crowns and two Italian Super Cups over his record 786 matches for the club in which he scored 307 goals. However, during a heartfelt send-off by the club and their fans on Sunday, the former Italy international confessed he's not ready to accept his career is over. "We're here, the moment has arrived. Unfortunately, the moment has arrived that I hoped would never come," Totti told the crowd in his postmatch speech. "Over the last few days, so much has been said about me, such wonderful things. You were behind me, pu

Barcelona's Lionel Messi wins Golden Shoe for record-equalling fourth time

Image
Lionel Messi has won the European Golden Shoe for a record-equalling fourth time, drawing level with Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo. Edin Dzeko was the last player who could deny him the honour, but the Roma striker needed to score 10 times against Genoa on Sunday to overtake the Barcelona forward. Dzeko did net in the game, but only once. Messi, 29, scored twice against Eibar last weekend to finish the Liga season as top scorer on 37 goals, giving him 74 Golden Shoe points with each goal worth two points in the table. Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost scored a hat trick in his final match against Chaves to finish second with 34 Portuguese Primeira Liga goals and 68 points. Borussia Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was third with 31 goals in the Bundesliga to take the Torjagerkanone in Germany. Messi previously won the award, which counts goals in the biggest leagues as more points, in 2010, 2012 and 2013. Since Ronaldo won the Golden Shoe as a Manchester United player i

Plateau United extend lead in Nigeria as MFM stumble

Nigeria Professional Football League leaders Plateau United were the big winners on match-day 21, while champions Enugu Rangers suffered another heavy defeat. Lobi Stars 3-0 Shooting Stars Kingsley Eduwo netted a first half brace and created an assist for the third as Lobi Stars secured a convincing 3-0 home win against Shooting Stars. The away team put up a lethargic display in Makurdi, their third successive loss as they struggle in the relegation zone. Eduwo opened the floodgates in the 11th minute, connecting with Ebube Duru's cross to finish with a flying header. He added a second just before the break, before setting up Sunday Akleche late in the match. FC Ifeanyi Ubah 2-0 Kano Pillars FC Ifeanyi Ubah extended their unbeaten league run to eight games following the 2-0 win against Pillars, with Godwin Obaje netting in each half to propel the Nnewi-based team up to third place. Arsenal end season on a high note with FA-Cup glory vs Chelsea

Image
Arsene Wenger secured his record seventh FA Cup final win as Arsenal produced a magnificent display to win a Wembley thriller against Premier League champions Chelsea. Alexis Sanchez gave Arsenal the lead in contentious fashion after only four minutes, when referee Antony Taylor overruled his assistant after he had flagged for offside against Aaron Ramsey. Chelsea also claimed Sanchez handled in the build-up and their task became even harder when Victor Moses was correctly sent off by Taylor in the second half after receiving a second yellow card for diving. Diego Costa revived Chelsea's hopes of a repeat of their league and FA Cup double in 2010 when Arsenal keeper David Ospina failed to keep out his deflected shot with 14 minutes left. Arsenal, outstanding throughout, refused to be denied and were back in front inside three minutes when Ramsey, who scored the FA Cup final winner against Hull City in 2014, did it again with a header from substitute Olivier Giroud's

The Wembley Battle between two London rivals for the Emirates FA Cup : Who needs it the most?

Image
The FA Cup Final is almost upon us, with Arsenal seeking to prevent Chelsea from completing a memorable Double. The London rivals face off at Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon for the chance to claim the capital as their own for the day by winning the Cup. Antonio Conte's Chelsea are looking to add another domestic trophy to their Premier League title, while the game is also hugely significant for Arsenal. Arsene Wenger missed out on Champions League qualification for the first time in his career this season, and needs silverware on Saturday to stand any chance of calling the season a success. The French coach's future is in serious doubt as Europa League football awaits, but sealing the FA Cup for a record seventh time could go some way to convincing fans he deserved more time to turn things around. Players takes   Victor Moses says Chelsea's 3-0 loss to Arsenal eight months ago remains fresh in the minds of the players, but is confident Antonio Conte's

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: Arsenal FA Cup win would make it a better season

Image
Winning the FA Cup final would make it "a better season" for Arsenal, says midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The Gunners missed out on a place in the Champions League for the first time in 20 years after finishing fifth in the Premier League. Arsenal face Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday (17:30 BST), with the Blues aiming for a league and cup Double. We have given ourselves an opportunity to win a trophy, said Oxlade-Chamberlain. In football, winning trophies is what it is all about. It will be a bonus to the season, to finish on a positive note. The north London side's season has been affected by fans protesting for manager Arsene Wenger to end his long association with the club. If his side win, Wenger will claim his seventh FA Cup - matching the number of times Liverpool and Chelsea have won it in. In addition, he has also won three Premier League titles. Oxlade-Chamberlain said: The season has been an odd one and if you look at the table, we finished on 75 points.

Mourinho : Europa League a competition i did not want to win.

Image
Jose Mourinho has labelled Manchester United's Europa League triumph as "the most important trophy" of his career, while adding he was happy to call time on a season that was perhaps his most difficult as a manager. United's victory over Ajax in Stockholm meant Mourinho finished his first season at Old Trafford with three trophies and a place in next season's Champions League. It also handed the club the one piece of silverware missing from their collection. Mourinho has won league titles in four countries and the Champions League twice. But after lifting the Europa League  a competition he has said in the past he did not want to win  he branded the achievement the most important of his 17-year managerial career. To me it is the most important trophy of my career because it is the last that is how I look at things, he told a news conference at the Friends Arena. "Of course, Champions League is bigger than Europa League but that is the last trophy and that is

Man United XI cost 14 times more than Europa League final opponents Ajax.

Manchester United are heavy favourites to win the Europa League final. Jose Mourinho's team have been fancied for the competition since the start; in contrast, even the Dutch journalists who follow Ajax regularly admitted at a prematch news conference last week they are surprised Peter Bosz's side have made it to Stockholm. All the pressure is on United. There is a European trophy on the line  the only one the club have never won and a place in next season's Champions League too. Mourinho and a number of his players have already admitted in the build-up that the success or failure of this season is dependent on the result at the Friends Arena  Today (Wednesday). The game has already been billed as Ajax's young, energetic underdogs against United's financial might and established stars. Here's how the two teams compare. MANCHESTER UNITED Average age of predicted starting XI: 26 Total career games: 3,052 Total cost: £229.5m United are a team of expensive and exper

How Kyrie Irving dominated Game 4

Image
CLEVELAND - Kyrie Irving broke his own record for points in a playoff game by a LeBron James teammate Tuesday, scoring a career-playoff-high 42 in the Cleveland Cavaliers' 112-99 Game 4 victory over the Boston Celtics. The performance helped the Cavs overcome a 16-point deficit and grab a 3-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference finals. They will try to make it to the NBA Finals for a third consecutive season in Game 5 in Boston on Thursday. Irving's previous career playoff high was 41 points, in Game 5 of the NBA Finals last season against the Golden State Warriors. That had been the most points a James teammate had scored in the postseason. In this one, Irving scored 36 of his points following James fourth foul with just less than seven minutes remaining in the first half, which forced James to the bench. Irving peaked in the third quarter, scoring 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting on a series of unrelenting drives to the basket through the Celtics' defense. Irving played th

Warriors sweep Spurs, enter NBA Finals 12-0

Image
The Golden State Warriors have advanced to the NBA Finals for the third consecutive year after sweeping the San Antonio Spurs by way of a 129-115 victory in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals on Monday. The Warriors are now a perfect 12-0 in the playoffs, and they are the first team in NBA history to accomplish such a feat. They're also the first team in NBA history to sweep three best-of-seven series in the same postseason. Stephen Curry produced a game-high 36 points on 14-of-24 shooting. He also had five boards, six assists and five 3-pointers. He dribbled circles around whoever was guarding him. There was minimum defensive resistance, whether he was penetrating to the basket or getting open for 3s out of pick-and-pop sets. After drilling his fourth 3-pointer of the game, Curry passed Kobe Bryant (292) for fifth place on the NBA's all-time playoff 3-pointers list. Curry now has 295 career postseason 3s. Curry said that starting 12-0 is great, but it doesn't mean an

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte named LMA and Premier League Manager of the Year

Image
Antonio Conte was named Manager of the Year by the League Managers Association in recognition of his title-winning first season as Chelsea head coach. The Italian becomes only the third non-British winner of the prestigious award after Claudio Ranieri was honoured for guiding Leicester to the title last year and Arsenal's Arsene Wenger claimed the accolade in 2002 and 2004. The LMA marked their 50th Manager of the Year award with the presentation of the Sir Alex Ferguson Trophy to "the manager who has made the greatest use of the resources available in the current campaign. Conte, also voted Premier League Manager of the Year, is the second Italian boss in two years to win the Premier League following the Foxes' triumph. The 47-year-old led the Blues to a league-record 30 victories from 38 league games after arriving at Stamford Bridge last summer, while also guiding his side to this weekend's FA Cup final against Arsenal.

Chelsea set record for number of Premier League wins in a season

Image
Chelsea have broken the Premier League record for wins in a season by beating Sunderland 5-1 to earn their 30th victory of the campaign. Goals from Willian, Eden Hazard, Pedro and Michy Batshuayi (two) cancelled out an early strike from Javier Manquillo to ensure that Antonio Conte's men, confirmed as Premier League champions earlier this month, made history on captain John Terry's 717th Chelsea appearance and final match at Stamford Bridge. Terry led the Blues out to a guard of honour from Sunderland players and was substituted in the 26th minute with a standing ovation from the home supporters, who had held aloft large commemorative banners and organised a vast tribute in the Shed End in tribute to the 36-year-old prior to kickoff. With their 30th Premier League victory of the season, Chelsea have broken the competition record set by Jose Mourinho's title-winning Blues teams in the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, who both won 29 of their 38 league match

Real Madrid beware: It's not OVER until it's OVER for the La Liga crown

Image
Real Madrid's 4-1 win against Celta Vigo on Wednesday means they need just one point from their final game of the season at Malaga this weekend to claim their first league title since 2012. If they lose, though, a win at home to Eibar would be enough to earn Barcelona a third straight title under Luis Enrique. And history shows the pressure of a final-day showdown can do funny things. ESPN FC take a look at five times Madrid and Barca have scrapped it out on the final day of the season to be crowned champions of Spain ... 1991-92 Going into the final day: 1. Real Madrid 54 2. JOHN TERRY: IT'S GOING TO BE A SAD AND EMOTIONAL FAREWELL FOR ME

Image
Chelsea captain John Terry said he could retire at the end of the season, after leading the champions in their 4-3 win over Watford at Stamford Bridge. The 36-year-old, who will leave the Blues in the summer, scored the opening goal on a night of celebration for the Premier League title winners.

What did the 'Invincibles' have that Arsene Wenger's Arsenal lack now?

Image
It's been 13 years to the day since Arsenal's "Invincibles" completed their unbeaten Premier League season with a 2-1 win over Leicester. In the 13 years since, Arsenal have yet to lift another league trophy. This season, they could finish outside the top four for the first time under Arsene Wenger, highlighting his continued failure to build a side comparable to that legendary team. So what did the "Invincibles" have that the current Gunners don't? Well, aside from the simple answer (Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira), Wenger's greatest-ever team had certain characteristics that his current crop seem to lack. Here's a look at five of them: Perfectionism You don't have a perfect season without being perfectionists. And Wenger recently revealed just how unwilling his "Invincibles" were to tolerate the smallest slip-up. After Arsenal clinched the league title at White Hart Lane with a 2-2 draw against To

Trophies more important than top 4- Mourinho

Image
Jose Mourinho says he has no regrets about Manchester United's failure to finish in the Premier League top four, insisting that trophies are more important to the club. United must win the Europa League final against Ajax in order to play in the Champions League next season after Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Tottenham in the last-ever match at White Hart Lane left them seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester City with two matches remaining. Mourinho left Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera and Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the bench following Thursday's Europa League semifinal second leg against Celta Vigo at Old Trafford, and United were 2-0 down to goals from Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane inside 48 minutes. Wayne Rooney halved the deficit with the last goal at the Lane and Mourinho insisted afterwards that he did not prioritise the competition, again criticised United's fixture schedule and said a top-four finish was less important to his team than silverw

BAT'S THE WAY TO DO IT

Image
Michy Batshuayi stepped out of the shadows to strike a famous late winner as Chelsea sealed the Premier League title with two games to spare after a hard-fought 1-0 win at West Brom. Batshuayi had not scored in the league since August but slid to meet a Cesar Azpilicueta cut-back in the 82nd minute just moments after coming off the bench to ensure the Blues secured a second league crown in three seasons and Antonio Conte triumphed at the first attempt. Chelsea had been frustrated during a goalless first half in which the hosts defended stubbornly, yet a game seemingly set for stalemate might have swung the other way had Salomon Rondon and Nacer Chadli finished fine second-half chances. Eden Hazard and Diego Costa had toiled in front of goal as Chelsea looked forced to wait at least until the weekend, but Batshuayi proved the unlikely hero to spark wild celebrations from Conte on the touchline at the final whistle. Romelu Lukaku named Everton Player of the Season by teammates and fans.

Image
Romelu Lukaku thanked manager Ronald Koeman for making him a better footballer after being named Everton's Player of the Season by both his teammates and the supporters. Lukaku, 23, picked up the Players' Player of the Season award and the Player of the Season trophy chosen by Everton fans at the club's end-of-season awards night on Tuesday. The Belgium international, linked with a summer exit from Goodison Park, has scored 25 goals in all competitions, with 24 of those coming in the Premier League. He said he was not always an easy guy and thanked Koeman for helping him reach the next level. Lukaku leads the race for the Premier League's Golden Boot, having scored three more than nearest rival Harry Kane of Tottenham with two games remaining  although Spurs have a game in hand. I'm very happy, he said in a speech accepting the awards. I want to thank the manager for pushing me, even though sometimes I'm not always an easy guy. He's taken me to
