Super Eagles squad to face Cameroon out in two weeks

Image
The list of Super Eagles players, that will take on Cameroon in their 2018 World Cup qualifiers on September 1 and 4 in Uyo and Yaounde respectively, will be announced in two weeks. This was confirmed by the Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical and development committee, Chris Green. “I expect Gernot Rohr to release his list of players for the game against Cameroon soon,” Green told Completesportsnigeria.com in Abuja. “All things being equal, the list will be made public in two weeks’ time. The coach is working hard to pick only in-form players for the two games against Cameroon. “Rohr is worried that the pre-season may not bring out the best of the players who are coming from holidays but has decided to use form first before any other consideration. I trust him to invite the best.” Green also assured that the Eagles will cope well to win the first leg in Uyo and go to Yaounde with high hopes three days later.

Manchester United are close to signing Serbia midfielder Nemanja Matic from Chelsea for £40m.

Image
Matic, 28, would be United's third summer buy, following £31m defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica and £75m striker Romelu Lukaku from Everton. Speaking after Sunday's 3-0 pre-season victory over Valerenga, United manager Jose Mourinho - who signed Matic for Chelsea - said: "We are waiting for news. He wants it very much. Mourinho spent £21m in January 2014 to sign Matic from Benfica for a second spell at  Stamford Bridge. Jose Mourinho has revealed that Nemanja Matic is desperate to finalise a move to Manchester United. He, however, refused to confirm if the transfer has been finalised. The Chelsea midfielder reportedly underwent a medical on Sunday and a picture of him wearing United training gear, leaked on social media. “I know that he wants it very, very much and when a player wants it very, very much, the chance is bigger. “We have a chance. In football, until it’s official, I saw many things happen… I refuse to say more than I’m telling you now.” Mourinho

Lacazette is not Injured :Wenger

Image
Alexandre Lacazette did not suffer an injury in Arsenal’s Emirates Cup defeat to Sevilla on Sunday, Arsene Wenger has confirmed. The Gunners’ club-record signing Lacazette scored his first goal at Emirates Stadium, converting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain cross to cancel out Joaquin Correa’s opener. Steven N’Zonzi then hit a brilliant strike to give Sevilla a 2-1 victory on Sunday. Lacazette was replaced by Alex Iwobi with 12 minutes to play and appeared to be limping as he walked off the pitch, but Wenger played down fears over the France international’s fitness. “I took him off but not because he was injured. He was one of the few players who had a positive game today. “It was an encouraging performance from Lacazette. He suffered a bit from the fact when we were a bit flat. “When he was involved he was intelligent, he protected the ball well and he got his goal – overall, it was an encouraging performance. “Week after week, Lacazette looks to adapt quickly. Overall, I think it will ta

Gunners wins the Emirates Cup

Image
Arsenal have retained the Emirates Cup, despite losing 2-1 to Sevilla on Sunday. Arsene Wenger’s men had won their first fixture on Saturday, beating Benfica 5-2. Sevilla saw off RB Leipzig 1-0 in the opening game. Correa gave the La Liga the lead, before the Gunners’ record signing Alexandre Lacazette equalized around the hour mark. However, Steven Nzonzi denied Arsenal victory with a stunning effort late on. It however did not stop the hosts from winning the 9th edition of the preseason tournament, thanks to number of goals scored. Alexandre Lacazette scored a first home goal for Arsenal since his £52m move from Lyon as the Gunners lost to Sevilla but retained the Emirates Cup. The France international, 26, tapped home following Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross. Sevilla had taken the lead through Joaquin Correa, while Steven N’Zonzi’s long-range strike ensured a 2-1 win. But the Gunners still claimed the trophy on goals scored – despite Sevilla winning both their matches. The La Liga

Cristiano Ronaldo appears today in court on tax charges

Image
Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has arrived at a Spanish court amid allegations he evaded millions in tax. Prosecutors accuse Ronaldo, reported to be the world's highest paid athlete, of evading €14.7m ($17.3m; £13.1m) in tax since 2010. The Real Madrid star has previously denied the allegation, saying his "conscience is clear". Ronaldo, 32, is the latest in a string of footballers to be pursued by the Spanish tax authorities. Argentina's Lionel Messi, who plays for Barcelona, was handed a 21-month prison sentence after being found guilty of the same charge last year. Earlier this month, the court ruled he could pay €252,000 in place of jail time. However, Messi was only accused of evading €4.1m in tax, €10.6m less than Ronaldo. Ronalda arrived to give evidence at a court in the Madrid suburb of Pozuelo de Alarcon just before 11:00 local time (09:00 GMT) on Monday. According to prosecutors, Ronaldo allegedly took "advantage of a company structure created in 2010 to

Sebastian Vettel wins Hungarian GP after a favour from Kimi Raikkonen

Image
Sebastian Vettel has extended his world championship lead with victory in the Hungarian GP ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas. Vettel, handicapped for most of the race by a steering issue, was indebted to team-mate Raikkonen not challenging him for the lead as his pace evaporated. In a highly risky but sporting move, Lewis Hamilton surrendered third place to Mercedes stable-mate Bottas at the final corner after previously being let through by the Finn in order to attack the Ferraris. The result means Vettel, who had started the race from pole position, will take a 14-point lead over Hamilton into the summer break at the head of the Drivers' Championship. With internal politics rather than race pace ultimately deciding Ferrari's finishing order, Mercedes' decision to swap their drivers on the last lap will be fiercely debated - especially if it ultimately costs Hamilton a fourth world title. "We could lose a championship because of those three points," te

Furious Neymar bust up with Barca team-mate in training as PSG talk intensifies

Image
Neymar has been caught on camera tangling with Barcelona team-mate Nelson Semedo in a heated training ground bust-up as speculation regarding his future intensifies. The incident occurs at Barca’s American training camp in Miami, with Neymar seen scuffling with recent signing from Benfica Semedo. The pair are forced apart, with Javier Mascherano quickly on the scene. Semedo walks away from the fiery flashpoint, but Neymar refuses to let the issue lie. Clearly flustered, the Samba star shouts over to Barca’s £26.8 million summer signing from Benfica as the rest of Ernesto Valverde’s squad watch on. He then looks to head back in the direction of Semedo before being restrained by Sergio Busquets. Neymar tears off his training vest before kicking a stray ball away in frustration. The clash has served to further fuel speculation suggesting that the 25-year-old could soon be heading out of Camp Nou, with Paris Saint-Germain leading the race for his signature. The Ligue 1 giants are repo

Chelsea on the Verge of signing Renato Sanches from Bayern Munich

Image
Chelsea have enquired after Bayern Munich's Renato Sanches with the hopes of landing him on loan.    Blues boss Antonio Conte held talks with compatriot and Bayern counterpart Carlo Ancelotti following the friendly between the two teams on Tuesday. Munich have confirmed that to be the case, per Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol:   The German side are said to be receptive to the possibility of sending Sanches out on loan for the season, but the midfielder has also attracted interest from AC Milan. Conte is hoping his late move will secure the 19-year-old ahead of the Rossoneri. Bundesliga expert Clark Whitney supplied the details of Milan's loan offer:   He arrived at Bayern last summer amid widespread interest, including from Manchester United, in something of a coup for the Bundesliga champions, albeit the cost of his transfer could ultimately total £75 million, according to Percy. The youngster had enjoyed a starring role at Benfica as a powerful and dynamic box-to

Lewis Hamilton: Mercedes is the "best team" in 2017 F1 title fight

Image
Lewis Hamilton believes Mercedes are demonstrating they are "the best team" in F1 after seemingly gaining the upper hand in their title battle with Ferrari. After Ferrari started the 2017 season by winning two of the first three races, the balance of power has shifted dramatically in the Silver Arrows' favour in recent weeks. Hamilton dominated last Sunday's British Grand Prix to secure Mercedes' third victory in the last four events with the reigning world champions now 55 points clear in the Constructors' Championship ahead of this week's Hungarian Grand Prix. "I think we're still showing that we are the best team," said Hamilton. "It's been great work by the team collectively - and we've not even brought many updates to the car. The last race we didn't bring an update, so we've just been able to exploit it more and learn about the car. "It still remains quite close. We've mostly had the upper hand in qua

Sebastian Vettel in no rush to sign Ferrari deal but expects 2018 stay

Image
Vettel says there is "no problem" despite delay and expects talks over summer; Championship leader confident ahead of Hungarian GP - "the determination is high to make sure we stay at the front." Sebastian Vettel says he is in no rush to sign a new Ferrari contract but insists there is "nothing wrong" and expects to stay with the team beyond 2017. The four-time world champion's current deal expires at the end of the season and, despite Ferrari's claims that a contract is on the table whenever he wants to renew, an agreement has yet to be reached. That delay has led to speculation about Vettel's future, with a move to Mercedes linked, while Red Bull boss Christian Horner claimed the German "holds the key for the driver market". But championship leader Vettel has moved to clarify his situation and says more Ferrari talks will take place over the summer break following this weekend's Hungarian GP.   "We have other things to

Mourinho -Pogba on the same level with Ronaldo, Messi

Image
Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has said that Paul Pogba showed he is on the same level as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, during their 1-0 loss to Barcelona. United wrapped up their pre-season tour of the United States with defeat to the La Liga giants at the International Champions Cup, but Pogba was impressive for the Premier League team. Mourinho praised the 24-year-old France international after the game, saying: “With Messi and Neymar, there is only one [of each]. There are not two. [Luis] Suarez, [Andres] Iniesta, [Gerard] Pique, Ronaldo, [Gareth] Bale, [Luka] Modric, Toni Kroos, there is only one of them. So they can only play for one club and not two. We cannot have them. They belong to the clubs. “You can be working very hard tactically to improve your team, to improve your players, but some players are special and against that nature there is nothing you can do. In the real matches you try to compensate the difference in quality with a certain tactic

Anthony Joshua - Wladimir Klitschko's Rematch date and location confirmed.

Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearns, has confirmed that the much-anticipated rematch between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko, will hold in Las Vegas, US, on November 11. “I’ve been in Vegas with AJ, officially applying for my Nevada boxing license to promote there and that went well,” Hearns told Sky Sports. “I met with the MGM and met with the T-Mobile Arena, Vegas is the front runner and November 11 is the date that is penciled in. “It will probably take a couple of weeks to get everything over the line, but I believe Klitschko will take this fight and believe Vegas will be the one. “AJ has been over there for about 10 days and has enjoyed himself and got to know the area a little bit. “The amount of British fight fans that would travel there, it will be a momentous occasion and one that we will savour for a long time so fingers crossed it’s a party in Las Vegas on November 11.” Hearns’ optimism about the fight holding in Las Vegas, was echoed by Stephen Espinosa who heads Showtime,

Mourinho Slams Manchester City for their (CRAZY SPENDING SPREE)

Mourinho blasts “crazy” transfer fees as Manchester City spend £130m on three fullbacks Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has criticized the “crazy” fees being paid for players this summer. Mourinho has seen local rivals Manchester City spend £130m just on three full-backs this summer, including £52m on Kyle Walker — who arguably was no longer first-choice at Tottenham. He said: “I don’t think the problem is what you pay for Paul Pogba. I don’t think the problem is going to pay crazy for Neymar. “I think the problem is with the other group [the lower-bracket players], which is a big group. “Players like Pogba, there are one or two big transfers per transfer window. The other is where you have 100 transfers and, for me, that’s the dangerous area of the mar “That’s what worries me a little bit, because now we speak about £30m, £40m or £50m in such an easy way.” He added: “We spent big money on a striker [Lukaku] because, with strikers, you either spend big or you don’t get. “W

Kenedy Sent to UK from Chelsea Tour of China After Offensive Social Media Posts

Image
Chelsea winger Kenedy has been sent home from the Blues' pre-season tour of Asia after he posted offensive comments on social media.  The club confirmed the reports in a bilingual statement on Tuesday: "Chelsea FC can confirm that Kenedy has returned to the UK and will play no further part in the club's pre-season tour of Asia.' According to John Percy in the Telegraph, Chelsea issued an apology after Kenedy, 21, made "inappropriate" comments about China on his Instagram account, and he has now been sanctioned by having to return to the UK with tour matches still remaining. Simon Johnson in the Evening Standard reported the Brazilian's Chelsea future is now "uncertain" following the incident. Goal's Robin Bairner explained that Chinese fans booed Kenedy before Chelsea's 3-0 win over Arsenal in Beijing on Saturday. Two Instagram posts had drawn the ire of the Chinese. "One was captioned 'F--king China,' while another of a

LeBron James 'Tempted to Beat' Kyrie Irving's 'Ass

Image
The relationship between LeBron James and Kyrie Irving continues to devolve, according to ESPN's Stephen A. Smith. Speaking on his podcast Monday, Smith quoted sources in James' camp about how bad things have gotten. "If Kyrie Irving was in front of LeBron James right now, LeBron James would be tempted to beat his ass," the source told Smith. He clarified that James' biggest problem isn't that Irving requested a trade, but instead that he's being made out to be a bad teammate during the recent debacle. Irving reportedly requested a trade on July 7, and according to Zach Lowe of ESPN, the Cavaliers intend to follow his wishes. A trade is considered "almost inevitable" with the point guard wanting to join either the Timberwolves, Spurs, Heat or Knicks. Meanwhile, Smith noted that Irving's camp is upset at James for reportedly leaking information about the trade request to the media. The two All-Stars have played together in Cleveland for th

Four more players to go for Conte as Alex sandro tops his list.

Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte has named four player that he wants at the club before the close of transfer window. According to the Telegraph, the Italian has also been provided with £250 million for the players. Juventus left-back, Alex Sandro tops the list which also has the likes of Inter Milan’s Antonio Candreva, Swansea’s Fernando Llorente and Southampton defender, Virgil Van Dijk. Of that quartet, the Telegraph says for Sandro, Chelsea “are optimistic about a £60m deal for the Brazilian.” The Londoners will step up efforts to reach an agreement for Candreva, while Llorente “is seen as a realistic option to boost Conte’s depleted attack.” Also, Van Dijk, is reported to be the lowest priority, but the Telegraph adds that Chelsea “are continuing to monitor his situation and could make a bid before the window closes.”

Usain Bolt want Jose Mourinho to Re-sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Image
World number one sprinter, Usain Bolt has advised Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho to re-sign striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The 30-year-old Jamaican spoke to reporters after he clocked an impressive 9.95 seconds to win gold at the Diamond League in Monaco. He was asked whether Manchester United should sign him, as an aspiring footballer himself, or Ibrahimovic. And he replied, “For me, I will go with Zlatan. “For me he really did great for United last season so if we get a chance to sign him back I would go with Zlatan.” Reports in the British media suggest that Mourinho could keep Ibrahimovic as a backup for new record signing, Romelu Lukaku.

Cristiano Ronaldo advice Neymar to Snub PSG

Image
Real Madrid Super-star, Cristiano Ronaldo, has reportedly told Neymar to leave rivals, Barcelona. According to Spanish publication, Diario Gol, Ronaldo also told the Brazilian to snub a move to Paris Saint-Germain and instead wait for a transfer to Manchester United. The Portugal captain believes that moving to PSG, would be a step down for Neymar and think the 25-year-old who he shares the same birthday with, can take his game to the next level in England. On Saturday, Sky Sports claimed that Neymar has decided to leave the Camp Nou , after becoming increasingly frustrated at “playing second fiddle” to Ronaldo’s eternal rival, Lionel Messi. The report however added that PSG remain the only club willing to meet the player’s €222m (£196m) release clause, with Chelsea and Manchester United unwilling to do so.

Chelsea 'persona non grata' in China over Kenedy's offensive posts

Image
The Brazilian caused uproar after posting a pair of videos to his Instagram page, and there's a possibility the club will face an outright ban Kenedy's insensitive Instagram posts may result in Chelsea being banned from China, Goal understands, amid an angry national backlash against the club. The Brazilian attracted criticism for a pair of videos posted to his social media page during his side's pre-season tour of the country. The posts were considered offensive by many Chinese fans and Kenedy was jeered by large sections of the crowd during his side's 3-0 friendly win over Arsenal in Beijing on Saturday.   Sources have confirmed to MufasaSport that government authorities have ordered Chinese media to “withdraw all related stories about Chelsea from their dual homepages and news apps". Meanwhile, a source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said there remains a remote possibility that Chelsea will suffer an outright ban, but that they will “closely monito

Usain Bolt: Para-athlete Liam Malone vows to run faster than Olympic legend

Image
Double Paralympic champion Liam Malone says he will use technology to run faster than Olympic legend Usain Bolt within the next three years. Double-leg amputee Malone won gold in the T44 200m and 400m at Rio 2016. Jamaican sprinter Bolt, who will retire this summer as an eight-time Olympic gold medalist, set the 100m world record of 9.58 seconds in 2009. "I'm aiming for 9.4 seconds," New Zealander Malone, 23, told BBC Radio 5 live. Malone, who is not competing at the World Para-athletics Championships in London because of injury, believes technological improvements to the blades used by amputee runners will bring down times. "In the next three years I'll run faster than Usain Bolt over 100m," said Malone, who was born without fibula bones and had his legs amputated below the knee when he was 18 months old.  "It won't be done in the Paralympics, and I've no intention of ever racing Usain Bolt or able-bodied people, it's about racing agains

I’m not interested in what Chelsea does – Mourinho reacts to Morata’s move

Image
Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has said he is not interested in what Chelsea does, after Alvaro Morata’s move was announced on Wednesday by his former club. Real Madrid and Chelsea have agreed a fee for Morata, who was also a target for United this summer.  Both Premier League clubs were also believed to be chasing Romelu Lukaku, with the Red Devils signing the striker for a reported £75million from Everton. “I’m not interested in what Chelsea Football Club does, really,” Mourinho told a news conference. “We needed a striker. With Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] in his best condition we needed one to give cover, to give options, him and Marcus [Rashford] was not enough, especially after Zlatan’s injury. “We got a big player, a player that I can compare with what he was a few years ago because he worked with me a few months like four or five years ago. His development was very, very good. “We think we have a player that is now a top player in Europe, has to prove

Alvaro Morata calls Chelsea the 'best club' as he arrives at Heathrow Airport in London to complete transfer

Image
Alvaro Morata has exclusively told Sky Sports News he is joining Chelsea because they are "the best club" after arriving in London for a medical. The 24-year-old striker flew in to Heathrow airport on Thursday morning to complete his move from Real Madrid for an initial £58m fee, which could rise to £70m according to Sky sources. Jose Mourinho admitted Chelsea's move for the Spain international was "obvious" after Manchester United signed Romelu Lukaku despite previously being close to a deal for Morata. Former Juventus forward Morata insists he is delighted to be joining Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge, while remaining coy on how near he came to a switch to Old Trafford. "This is the best club," Morata, speaking exclusively to Sky Sports News reporter Paul Gilmour upon arrival in London, said. "Antonio Conte is one of the best coaches in the world and I'm so happy to work with Antonio." Asked how close he came to joining Manchester

Carl Ikeme thankful as Wednesfield name Stand after Wolves keeper

Image
Semi-professional English club Wednesfield have honoured a grateful Nigeria goalkeeper Carl Ikeme with a stand at their ground. The 31-years-old was recently diagnosed with acute leukaemia, a form of cancer of the blood that could affect his career long-term. The non-league club, based in Wolverhampton, the same as Ikeme’s club Wolverhampton Wanderers, disclosed their plans to name a stand in the Super Eagles star’s name to raise funds earlier on Wednesday. “Wednesday night we entertain @WolvesUtd1 (Wolverhampton United, another non-league club) – We will officially open and re-name our new stand in support of @Carl_Ikeme of @Wolves,” Wednesfield FC had tweeted Wednesday afternoon. “We’d hoped to sell the naming of the Stand to raise funds, however it was felt support of @Carl_Ikeme was worth much much more “Kick off will be 7.30pm – we will charge £3 entry, all monies will go to @CureLeukaemia.” Touched by the gesture, Ikeme replied to Wednesfield FC’s tweet: “Thanks for the suppor

Neymar rubbishes talk of €222million move to PSG

Image
Barcelona forward, Neymar, has insisted he is “happy” at the club, after being heavily linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain. It was reported that Neymar is ready to quit the Camp Nou in a deal worth €222million, after growing frustrated in Spain. In an email exchanged with Goal, the player has stated that he is looking forward to next season at Barca. “The last one was my best season in Barcelona. I am very adapted to the city, the club and I am happy here. That is reflected on the performance of an athlete,” “It was the season where I felt more comfortable, even though we did not win the titles we would have wanted. We played great games and lived incredible moments. Now, we need to work for the 2017-18 season so it will be even more positive individually and as a group,” the Brazilian said. Neymar signed a new deal until 2021 in October of last year.

Financial concept for Football transfers (Things you need to know)

Image
Time-Value Acquiring a player in football is very common in clubs around the world.  So how does it all work?  If we go by the media reports clubs reach an agreement on the specific fee ($ value) that a player is worth, and if both sides accept the deal, the player moves to the new club. This simplistic picture is communicated by the idea that clubs "buy" and "sell" players, which makes transfers apparently easy to understand. We all know what buying and selling means, and have some basic understanding of a system of valuation. Unfortunately, the current perception of the transfer market has very little to do with what's exactly happening.  The economics of football transfers are remarkably more complicated, and a simple "buy-sell" model, although useful in allowing fans to celebrate the acquisition of their new icon, is nowhere nearly sufficient to explain what truly going behind transfers. So why are transfers in football complicated? Because un

An Improved two-year deal for Chelsea's Antonio Conte

Image
Antonio Conte has signed a new two-year contract with Chelsea. The deal mirrors Conte's original contract in length, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2019, but contains improved terms for the Italian, Source Sky. Conte signed a three-year deal when he took over last summer, and guided the Blues to the Premier League title in his first season in charge. Conte said: "I am very happy to have signed a new contract with Chelsea. We worked extremely hard in our first year to achieve something amazing, which I am very proud of. Now we must work even harder to stay at the top. "The Chelsea fans have given me so much support since I arrived here one year ago and it is important we continue to succeed together." Under the guidance of Conte, 47, Chelsea recovered from a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal on September 24 to mount an impressive run of form which saw them produce 30 wins - as well as a club-record 13 consecutive league victories. However, they missed out on

Tour de France: Chris Froome reclaims yellow jersey as Michael Matthews wins stage 14.

Image
Chris Froome reclaimed the yellow jersey in the Tour de France as Michael Matthews won stage 14 in Rodez. Matthews burst clear of Greg Van Avermaet on the steep finish to the 181.5km stage from Blagnac to claim the honours on the day. Team Sky's Froome crossed the line just behind in seventh place while Astana's Fabio Aru struggled up the hill and lost his overall lead. Three-time Tour winner Froome now leads the general classification by 18 seconds from the Italian, with Frenchman Romain Bardet of AG2R La Mondiale third, 23 seconds back. With gradients of 10 per cent in the 600m climb to the finish line, Saturday's stage was primed for the punchers and so it proved as Matthews did battle with Philippe Gilbert, Edvald Boasson Hagen, and Van Avermaet - winner on this finish in 2015. Quick-Step Floors' Gilbert went early with BMC's Van Avermaet on his wheel, but Matthews burst past them both and the Team Sunweb rider had time to celebrate before the line. Van Av

Loic Remy set to leave Chelsea this summer

Image
Loic Remy is set to leave Chelsea this summer with Marseille and Everton interested in signing the forward. The Frenchman will fly to China this week for the club’s pre-season tour but will be allowed to leave the club if they sign a new centre forward. Remy would like to stay at the Premier League champions but has realized he will have limited first-team opportunities this season. The former QPR and Newcastle forward, who has 12 months left on his contract, scored twice on Saturday in Chelsea’s 8-2 win over Fulham in a friendly at their Cobham training ground. Chelsea signed the striker for £10m from QPR in 2014 but injuries have seen him restricted to only 32 Premier League appearances. He was loaned to Crystal Palace last season but made only five league appearances after injuring his ankle in training last September.

Lewis Hamilton wins record-equalling fifth British GP

Image
Lewis Hamilton took a dominant victory at Silverstone to tie the all-time record of five career wins in the British Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver equalled the tally of Scot Jim Clark and Frenchman Alain Prost with his fourth home win in a row to add to his first win for McLaren in 2008.   Hamilton's victory cut his deficit to Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel to just one point in the championship as the German suffered a front-left tyre failure when running third with two laps to go, dropping to seventh. The same problem had hit Vettel's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen the lap before, costing the Finn an almost certain second place, promoting Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas to a Mercedes one-two. Raikkonen recovered to finish third. Following the podiums celebrations, Hamilton went down to see the crowd, surfing on their outstretched hands and high-fiving as he ran past the adoring throng. "The support has been incredible this weekend," he said. "I am so p

Wimbledon 2017: Roger Federer beats Marin Cilic to win record eighth title

The Swiss third seed won 6-3 6-1 6-4 as seventh seed Cilic struggled with a blister on his left foot and broke down in tears during the second set. Federer, 35, finished the contest in one hour and 41 minutes to claim his first Wimbledon title since 2012. He becomes the oldest man in the Open Era to win at the All England Club. "It is cruel sometimes," Federer said of Cilic's physical difficulties. "But Marin fought well and is a hero, so congratulations on a wonderful tournament." Federer surpasses Pete Sampras and William Renshaw, who won their seventh titles in 2000 and 1889 respectively, with only Marina Navratilova still ahead in terms of Wimbledon singles titles on nine. He has won two of the three Grand Slam titles so far this year, having returned from a six-month break to win the Australian Open i
